In the fall, the trees lose their leaves, and the flowers make way for new ones to bloom in the spring. The plant’s life cycle has a lot in common with the hair’s life cycle. The hair life cycle is comprised of three distinct phases (anagen, catagen and telogen) during which the hair grows, is maintained, regresses and then falls. This means that it is perfectly normal to lose between 25 and 60 hairs a day.
However, in some cases, this loss becomes more significant during the fall months. What is behind this? A sheer lack of light that affects the hormones and thus has a direct impact on hair growth. The scientific term for this reactional hair loss is acute telogen effluvium, the most common form of diffuse hair loss. Seasonal hair loss can also be brought on by stress and accumulated fatigue, often associated with this time of year, as well as by a change in diet.
Seasonal hair loss can appear at any time, even if you have never been affected before. Help slow it down by changing a few daily habits.
- Try shampoo that is gentle on your hair and scalp.
- Keep your hair down or loose rather than in tight updos or braids, which can cause the hair fiber to become fragile.
- Vitamins and minerals play a fundamental role in maintaining a normal hair cycle, especially with regard to renewing the hair bulb’s matrix cells, which divide rapidly.
- Sufficient amounts must reach the scalp in order to provide it with enough nourishment and to encourage proper hair growth.
- During changes in season, dietary supplements containing B vitamins, sulfur amino acids, zinc, iron and selenium can be an effective complementary treatment against seasonal hair loss.
For shiny and soft hair prepare a mixture of 1 cup of your daily conditioner and 2-3 tablespoons of honey. Apply this mixture evenly on wet hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes and wash it off thoroughly. This mixture will close down your hair’s cuticle and give your hair that amazing shine.
You may have already heard of the baking soda therapy. Make a mixture of 3 tablespoons of baking soda and some water. Rinse your hair with this solution after shampooing. Let it set in for at least 5 minutes before the final rinse. This therapy will help to remove the excess shampoo and styling product from your hair.
