Taking care of your hair during the summer months

As we are approaching the summer months, we wanted to give you some tips and tricks for taking care of your hair during the summer season. Have you considered that during the summer months we take extra care of our skin? We use different, more hydrating products, drink more water, and protect our face and body from the sun and the sea or pool water as much as possible. Treat your hair like your skin this summer and defend it from potential damage.

Just as the sun damages your skin, it can damage your hair as well. Saltwater and chlorine can also affect our hair. The outcome of not taking good care of our hair? A few weeks into summer, hair that was shiny and easily managed looks and feels unhealthy and dry.

Sun Protection

The ultraviolet rays of the sun can “burn” or dry out your hair. The damage is most obvious when we see color-treated hair becoming faded, bleached, and brassy. Even hair that isn’t colored will suffer from sun-induced stress. Those UV rays dry out hair and rough up the normally smooth layer of your hair. We always recommend getting haircut before summer so that it is strong over the next few months.

Another factor to consider? Use a sun protection product specifically designed for hair.

  • Sunlight is drying and can lighten hair simply from exposure, and your scalp, like any other skin on the body, is susceptible to skin cancer.
  • A sprayable product will help absorb UV rays instead of letting them all get through to your hair.
  • Most products contain coconut water and vitamin E in order to provide antioxidant-packed moisture that won’t leave hair looking greasy.

Swimming in the sea or pool

Swimming in a swimming pool or the sea can also damage your hair. The chlorine is stripping your hair of its natural protective oils. On the other hand, swimming in the sea stresses your hair in a different way. The heavy salt content in seawater draws water out of your hair and skin, which will also dry your hair out. This is why it is important to remember to rinse your hair well after swimming, and of course washing your hair later on with the right products.

Tips from the experts

Keep in mind that especially if you are using a blow dryer to dry your hair, your hair is more likely to become frizzy. That’s because dry hair soaks up the extra humidity in the air. In the summer, it is ideal to not dry your hair. If you do, make sure you are using a heat protection product.

Switch to an extra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. You may be washing your hair more frequently and therefore, the products that you use need to be summer appropriate: moisturizing but not too heavy.

After the summer months and your vacation, have a deep-moisture treatment at a hair salon you trust or by creating your own hair mask at home. An avocado mask is just what you need for soft, shiny and deeply hydrate hair.

  • The avocado fruit is rich in vitamins A and E, saturated fats, and minerals, which all nourish damaged and dry hair, helping to moisturize and strengthen it.
  • Mash a ripe, peeled avocado with one egg and apply the mixture to wet hair for 20 minutes. Then rinse the hair several times.
