Stress and Hair Loss

Stress and Hair Loss

We all know that stress can impact our health in a variety of ways, ranging from simple medical issues to very dangerous conditions. Hair loss is one of the results of going under a lot of stress. This is a fact that has been scientifically proven and there are many medical reasons that can explain how stress and hair loss can be related.

One of the main reasons that too much stress can cause hair loss is due to the fact that stress can increase the body’s production of adrenaline. Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone that is produced by both the adrenal glands and certain neurons. It plays an important role in the fight-or-flight response by increasing blood flow to the muscle. Adrenaline can be converted into cholesterol, which may raise the body’s levels of testosterone. This is a hormone that impacts hair growth and can cause hair loss and/or thinning of the hair in people whose follicles are sensitive to circulating levels.

Another reason is that when we are under a lot of stress, we tend to not take as good care of ourselves as we should. For example, we may skip meals or eat food with little nutritional benefits. Our diet has serious implications on hair growth. Improper nutrition is one of the leading causes of hair loss in women. This can be due to the imbalances in vitamins, iron deficiency, inadequate intake in protein, or meals that are very low in calories. Moreover, stress can impact digestion, which can be an issue since the absorption of nutrients may not take place, reducing their effectiveness.

Furthermore, it is known that stress affects our immune system and we can become more susceptible to illness. Just like our diet, being healthy overall is linked to having healthy hair. Being sick often, which can vary from having the flu to systematically having high fevers, will upset hair growth over time. A poor immune system can also cause dandruff, which means that the individual may suffer from a flaky and/or itchy scalp. If those symptoms worsen, they can lead to hair loss.

Undergoing a lot of stress is very difficult to handle on its own. We understand that hair loss can be an issue that is only making your stress levels worse creating a vicious cycle because the more stressed you become about the issue, the worse the hair loss issue will become.
