Hair loss can be a very stressful issue and can impact anyone regardless of their gender or age.
Hair loss impacts the way we feel about ourselves and can easily shake our confidence, leading to bigger emotional issues. There are various reasons why hair loss can occur and there are also many treatment options, from home remedies to more invasive techniques.
This blog post aims to explain how our hair grows and underline the most common reasons why hair loss may take place, while taking into consideration all the factors that may impact the likelihood of hair loss occurring.
Our hair is made up of a protein called keratin, which is produced in hair follicles in the outer layer of skin. As follicles produce new hair cells, old cells are being pushed out through the surface of the skin. The average rate of growth is fifteen centimeters per year. However, as we grow older, the rate of hair growth decreases.
Hair loss may depend on genetic factors. This means that hair follicles gradually shrink and produce finer and shorter hair with each growth cycle.
Hair loss may also be related to reactive factors. In this case, hair loss is the result of a trigger; it does not depend on genetic factors but it is the result of an internal imbalance. Stress, both physical and or emotional, is one of the most common reasons for hair loss. However, many more factors play a significant role as well.
Hormonal imbalance can affect hair growth. Deficiencies, such as vitamin deficiency, an iron deficiency or suffering from anemia, also create the grounds for hair loss. Of course, hereditary conditions and genes may make someone more prone to having to deal with hair loss.
Finally, some factors that often play a role in hair loss are related to medical conditions one may be encountering and/or dramatic weight loss. It is important to remember that people of any age and regardless of their gender, may notice signs of hair loss. However, the signs of hair loss are different in men and women. Men usually notice thinning hair on their scalp, a receding hairline, and a hair loss pattern that leaves the crown of the head exposed. Women on the other hand, usually notice hair thinning, especially at the crown of the head.
